Tool Reviews
We were recently given the opportunity to review and compare a few different models of Fenix brand LED flashlights. We reviewed the Fenix; TK10, L2D, PD30 and PD20. These are mid priced, high quality lights that push a lot of light from standard size batteries. Three of these lights use the common CR123 size battery, one uses AA size batteries. We looked at three lights with 5 separate functions and beam intensities. One of these Fenix lights (the TK10) is a tactical design with two brightness intensity options and a less complicated interface. All of these lights include replacement parts and other accessories in the package when you buy them.

Between 60 & 70% of US tungsten consumption is used in the manufacture of new carbide. Last year, tungsten recovered from scrap accounted for 31% of tungsten consumption by US processors and end users.
The rest was imported; 43% of the import was from China. China has approximately 65% of the worlds known tungsten reserves and last year produced 86% of the newly mined tungsten, world wide.

China is also the worlds largest tungsten consumer. The Chinese Government, in order to conserve its resources and meet its increasing domestic demand, has limited tungsten production and exports while increasing tungsten imports. These policies are expected to continue.

I stopped in and talked with Russell the owner of Desert Surplus. He is a good guy, knows a lot about the surplus business and has done a great job of stocking his store with of the stuff you like to see in a surplus store.

Like all good surplus stores the inventory is always changing so stop in often.

The always useful 550 cord (parachute cord) has many uses and will continue to have more. It's been around for many years (since WW2) and continues to be an important and useful tool. 550 cord is a Kernmantle rope which is a rope constructed with its interior core (the kern) protected with a woven exterior sheath (mantle) This design provides strength, durability, and flexibility.

We made two slings (for throwing rocks) out of 550 cord. We found the idea and instructions on the EDC Forum. Both of these were easy to assemble. The tan version uses two cords, the black one was made from just one length of 550 cord. The tan two cord version is larger and longer, but either can be made larger or smaller.
